By planting in a cold environment, you can plant early in the growing season, even in areas with short summers. A warm environment within the frame allows you to plant seeds earlier than you would otherwise, giving your plants more time to mature before the first frost. This is especially useful for warm-season crops such as tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.

A: Cold frames are typically used for cold-hardy plants that need protection from frost and severe temperatures near the beginning or end of season. You can sow seeds directly into a cold frame weeks earlier than the surrounding garden beds. In the same way, you can keep your plants alive 2 to 4 weeks longer in the fall.

A: This includes cold frames, lean-tos, unheated conservatories and car ports with clear roofs. All these make good places to sow seeds that don't need heat, but benefit from protection until the plants are big enough to put outside. The more control over your conditions you have, the more successful germination will be.
